Kim Hill

My work at the moment is influenced by the artwork on the 18th and 19th century gravestones I have photographed in Caithness.  Using this iconography I am interested in playing with perspective and colour to create an intangible narrative within the picture plane. This reflects the difficulty in acertaining complete histories from the old, weathered and forgotten stones.  I greatly admire the complex perspective in the work of John Tunnard, the narrative in Giottos and both the drawing and painterly qualities of Roberto Matta.

Marian Barber

My work explores a make believe world based on my own memories of childhood stories and playthings. This, however, is no longer a world quite as safe as the experiences it is inspired by. Things are less stable. Through the use of ambiguous situations and implied narrative the actions of my characters/creatures can never be completely understood by the viewer, thus creating a frustrating but exciting tension. The moments presented are also marked by hints of anxiety, violence, and sexuality: feelings not often associated with the idealized view of childhood memories.

My work derives from using found objects that resonate with me and fit the psychological themes I usually work with. I’m interested in the layers and depths that constitute human personality, human relationships and human society. I often process the object (sometimes reproducing it) or incorporate another object or material that I feel adds to or changes the object to underline the representation of these layers. I have an interest in the domestic and the objects are often domestic in origin but I am looking to use them to represent some universal truths.

The Art of Convincing – WIP.

After researching how artists use assistants to help with the making of their ‘work’, I decided to look at how art began…. Cave art was made to document the stories of their day; hunting and fighting, and as children we create art for the sole purpose of it being visually pleasing. Why is it then that artists today are having their pieces made solely by other people; yet are able to attach an egotistical and loaded meaning to their ‘work’, when they haven’t even created the piece themselves?

I then went to look at how children create their own pieces of work both with the limitations of a theme as well as freely. I have used their work to help in inspiring my own pieces, which I have brought though some of the elements and themes from my past years work; White on White.

This current body of work is influenced by German Expressionist Film and the Art Nouveau sculpture ‘Spirit of Contemplation’ by Albert Toft.
I admire the work of Leni Riefenstal, Fritz Lang, Janet Cardiff, Christopher Le Brun and Ross Bleckner.
I am particularly interested in monochrome and its adaptability for creating very atmospheric pieces and the use of light as architecture and its endless space filling possibilities.
I have always been interested in merging contemporary with traditional methods and witnessing the unexpected results that this engenders.
Experimentation is a key feature of my work. The unexpected is always more exciting than the planned.

My paintings are the beautiul landscape pictures. I incorporated several image of a scene into my works.I would say that scenery relates colour and emotion. On the other hands, Colour also ties to human mind.Colour describes not only the transition of nature but also the change of human. My works are not visible scenery but poetical representation of nature.

I’ve started to look at the science side of light, looking at light through a prism and the spectrum of colors that come from it. Looking at the light and color upon the visual sense and its subsequent interpretation by the brain.
I used the spectrum of color in response with the eye, to show this aspect of see this spectrum of invisible color from light that we don’t see, using the eye as the lens it is.

“The bells tolled somewhere, where those poppies grow.
That played on the day when you fell from my fields of ivory.”

My work titled “Bells for her” derives from this quotation taken from my collection of poetry; this informed my work to develop a personal metaphorical fairytale, dealing with miscarriage and loss through sensitive marks and materials. Chapters of the story are transferred onto materiel as illustrations. The illustrations are to be presented as a patchwork blanket this collection shows my work in progress, along with the rag toys that will be presented alongside the blanket in a mosses basket and the fairytale which will be realised into a performance piece.

My second piece titled ‘White Stag in Winter Poppies’ reveals the final scene of the story, continuing to use materials as a source to present my work in a sensitive manor.

Over the last two years I have been looking at identity and the human form. I have had life drawing lessons and I feel as though I can confidently draw the human body. I have translated these drawings into 3D sculptures, which I believe to be a great success.
I find people very interesting and I like the complexity of human nature. I find it interesting that you can never truly know someone, as you can choose what you want people to know. I have also been looking at masks and how they can completely change the character of someone. I have made masks and taken photos of them in different environments to see how they work in different situations.
I have developed my work by looking at anthropomorphism. I wanted to explore the relationship between humans and animals. In my work I try to match animals to a specific human trait. I am very pleased with the way my work is turning out and I want to develop this further by taking it towards sculpture, photography and performance.

Fantasy bicycle world by Lindsay Cottam

I started cycling to save on transport costs and get fit. As I cycled more and more I found that I had become addicted to the sense of freedom gained from cycling .Far from taking up a practical hobby. I realised that I had found a new way of living. A far more desirable one. I have always been committed to the idea of dropping out of society through non participatory pursuits as a form of subversion, escapism and passive anarchy. I found that I could add cycling to my list of refusal to engage activities. I found myself increasingly drawn to cycling down back lanes, bridle paths and through fields to disengage and zone out from the all systems go society that we unfortunately live in .My work this year focuses on my bicycle travels and the clarity of thought that is gained from solitude and introspection. I will be sharing my observations on life in audio form to try and encourage more people to disengage with society and try and remember what they dreamt of being when they were younger.

Paintings of continued research into expressionist figurative observations contrived from spontaneous life sketches. Contorted faces and hulking forms appear from twisted shapes, the minimization of colour focuses the importance of narrative mark making. Texture and material are essential to the description of the works.

Barbara Tinsley The Iridescent Memory.

This painting, of the clowns on their wedding day is meant to
accompany my narrative series of paintings ‘The Vase of Clowns’
which tells the story of the doomed love affair between an older woman
and a much younger man. The older woman, abandoned by her young lover,
imagines her wedding day . She kneels at his feet obviously besotted
but he is nonchalantly blowing bubbles which symbolise the transience
of their relationship. There are three strange figures which could be
bridesmaids but when we look closely we see that they are holding a
golden rope which has broken in the middle. They are the fates which
have determined that the relationship will end.

There’s this saying, ‘You can only cross the same river once.’ and i believe you can only cross the same street once because all the elements are constantly changing.

These works are a series of experiments influenced by cities i have visited all over the world. What I see as a city is not necessarily the buildings or the people but all different elements, whether that be light, text, sound, texture or the over all atmosphere of these cities. I have been trying to recreate these elements by experimenting with different materials and surfaces on found objects and canvas, in a sense bringing part of the city into the gallery space.

For the past three years I have based my work upon found objects and the way we interpret these in our everyday lives. These objects are undervalued and seen as useless, and the desire to own them has become less. My aim is to transform them into valued pieces, and to regain the desire that was lost, and achieve a level of appreciation for the materials that are sometimes overlooked.

The three pieces I have chosen for the exhibition are objects I have deconstructed and reconstructed into new objects. Each piece has inherited part of each other and together their similarities and differences become clear. They have developed into characters that share human qualities, and should be seen as a series.

The work is based on the content of growth, primarily a holistic image
of growth which encompasses all living matter, mineral substances and
spiritual influences. The image is then broken down and focuses on
the similarities we hold as human beings.

Naoko Shohi

For Hope I have made two portrait collages of women’s faces and a one collage of yellow chrysanthemums. Both female portraits and yellow Chrysanthemums are motifs or symbols which are quite familiar subjects for me. I am interested in nature and humanity . I particularly like observing human faces, I like the challenge of attempting to describe the familiar and the paradox of Describing something so familiar as the human visage yet is so complicated to visualize in paper. I wish to further consider the structure and shadow on my face , as well as the materials I use to describe it .
