“Line and Space”

An exhibition by Jonathan Gray & Michael Leason

Jonathan’s work is based on a collection of found objects, and using these to create paintings and drawings from. He has created a large scale charcoal drawing which is based on drawing the objects from one view, then drawing the same objects over the top but this time from a different view.

In his other two works he has used a range of materials which include charcoal, marker pens and paint. The tools he has used to apply these have also become part of the work. These are connected with wires which are pinned onto the canvas and add another dimension to the work. In using the wires he has also had less control in how the marks are made on the canvas. This has developed the idea of a machine creating the work.

Mike’s two sculptures are constructed from thin pieces of scrap wood, which trace lines in space.

The first piece originates from the re-use of a suspended timber framework (employed in on earlier work), into which other elements were inserted and suspended. Each element takes one of two forms. The elements overlap but do not touch. The limited range of colours emphasises the linearity and simplicity of the piece.

The second piece is a contrast and response to the first in that it sits on the ground and is vertical in character. The same process was used- two forms of elements that overlap and interlock, separated yet held by thin wire.

The works were constructed intuitively, without preparatory drawings or with reference to any other artists work.
